Fair Betting Sites conducted a survey of 2,010 UK adults on their thoughts and actions as Elon Musk completed his takeover of social media giant Twitter. 

Musk has introduced a new subscription service on the app called ‘Twitter Blue’ which allows users to buy a verified tick, amongst other features for $7.99 a month. There are also rumours the SpaceX and Tesla CEO will bring back the popular app Vine.

41% of 25-34 year olds (millennials) say they will quit Twitter now Elon Musk has taken over

85% of Brits say they won’t pay the £6.99 monthly subscription fee for Twitter Blue which includes account verification, the ability to edit tweets and upload videos in 1080p HD.

89% of 45-54 year olds have also said they will not pay the monthly charge to use Twitter Blue.

43% of Brits say they will stop using Twitter if there is increased censorship on the social platform

43% of Brits surveyed said they will stop using the app if there is increased censorship, such as Twitter’s suspension of far-right Brazilian politicians.

48% of 16-34 year olds say they will also stop using Twitter if increased censorship is introduced.

49% of Brits say they are ‘very unlikely’ to download Vine if Elon Musk brought the social media app back

49% of Brits say they are very unlikely to download Vine if Elon Musk reintroduced the social media app, following its discontinuation in 2017. 50% of Gen Z say they would download Vine if the app was introduced, compared to 26% of men saying they are likely to download versus 12% of women.

29% of Gen Z (16-24 year olds) say they have at least five social media apps on their phones, with the likes of Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok and Reddit available to download.

“The wave of people quitting Twitter was largely due to Elon Musk’s takeover and how divisive he is as a CEO. Musk has told staff they must commit to a new ‘hardcore’ Twitter or he will fire them and has already dismissed multiple employees who questioned his strategy on the app. Negativity surrounding the social media tool has hit breaking point for key demographics.”
