Maddison edges into the squad with bookies odds
Leicester City’s James Maddison is expected to edge his way onto Gareth Southgate’s plane to Qatar and join 25 of his fellow countrymen to the World Cup this month.
Maddison has recorded an impressive 18 goals and 12 assists in 30 games in the Premier League since August 2021, more than the likes of Saka, Mount, Foden, Sterling and Grealish.
James Ward-Prowse looks set to miss out at 11/10, whilst Kalvin Phillips is expected to return to fitness and make the squad at 8/15.
Tammy Abraham set to miss out behind Toney and Wilson
Roma striker Tammy Abraham is expected to miss out on this month’s trip to Qatar, with Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson claiming the final two forward spots.
Abraham has two goals in 11 Serie A starts this season, unable to reach the heights of the previous campaign so far. In 2021/22, the former Chelsea man netted 17 goals in 36 starts.
Trent and Walker both get a seat on the plane
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker are both expected to join England’s 26-man squad for the World Cup, despite issues including injury and recent form giving Gareth Southgate a headache.
Conor Coady (2/7) is also expected to claim the final defensive spot ahead of AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori (5/6), in a decision that would be considered controversial across England’s fanbase.
The bookies are increasingly confident that James Maddison (4/9), Kalvin Phillips (8/15) and Kyle Walker (1/6) with odds-on prices will suit up for England at the World Cup, which begins on Sunday 20 November as Qatar host Ecuador in the opening fixture.
